Racing doesn't happen unless we have volunteers and Ronde van Palouse is no exception.  And remember, if you provide two volunteers we will waive your entrance fee! 1) Date: Saturday, April 14, 2012

2) Report to Liberty High School (6404 East Spangle Waverly Road, Spangle, WA‎) no later than 10:15 a.m.

3) Approx. time commitment: 10:15 a.m. through 2:30 p.m.

4) Three types volunteer positions:
- Flagger: the person who holds stop sign and stops traffic. While pointing the riders in the correct direction is not required, racers certainly appreciate it. Represented as a stop sign in the diagrams below.
- Marshal: the person who directs riders in the correct direction. Represented as a red, pointing hand in the diagrams below.
- Driver: the person who drives either lead car or support car (must have own transportation).

5) Although volunteers can be any age, flaggers, marshals, and drivers must be 18 and older.

6) No prior experience is necessary. All volunteering duties are very easy to understand but also very important do to correctly. Adequate instructions for all volunteers will be given before the race begins.

7) Volunteers should print, complete, sign, and bring the USA Cycling Volunteer Release to the SRV trailer. In the "Type of Activity," please indicate whether you'll be a flagger, driver, or marshal.

8) Volunteers should dress for just about any conditions.  This is an early April race in the middle of the Palouse.  That means the following items are strongly recommended:

• Below are the intersections to which volunteers will be assigned.
• The purple arrow is the direction the racers will be traveling.
• The stop sign represents a flagger, i.e. the volunteer who stops motorized vehicle traffic so racers can pass safely.
• The pointing finger represents the marshal, i.e. the volunteer who directs the racers around the course.
• The dotted lines from both the stop signs and the pointing finger represent the actual location the volunteer is to stand for their assignment. It is important to understand this and to be in this location for your assignment.

Assignment 1 requires a flagger to stop traffic heading south-west on Spangle-Wavery when riders are about to start their second lap.

 Assignment 2 requires both a flagger to stop traffic east on Valley Chapel AND a marshal to point riders east.

Assignment 3  requires a marshal to point riders south onto S. Jackson Road.

Assignment 4  requires a marshal to direct riders to leave the pavement and proceed south on Rattlers Run, the start of the gravel roads. This marshal will also have some flagging duties, stopping the very infrequent vehicles that will come off of E. Rattlers Run Rd.

Perspective from the racers' point of view: Slight turn to the right off of S. Jackson Rd. and onto the gravel of S. Rattlers Run Rd. Marshal will direct riders onto the gravel and stop any traffic that may be coming from the road on the right, E. Rattlers Run Rd.

Assignment 5  requires TWO flaggers, one to stop traffic heading west on West Bradshaw, and one to stop eastbound traffic far enough away from the corner so riders who cross over the unmarked double yellow are safe.

Assignment 6  requires a combined flagger/marshal.  The flagging part of the position requires the volunteer to stop traffic heading southeast on S. North Kentuck Trails Rd so riders can turn southeast onto that road without having to stop for traffic. The marshalling part requires the marshal to point riders right (northeast) onto S. North Kentuck Trails Rd. Additionally, when riders are finishing, this volunteer will completely stop traffic from entering E West Bradshaw Rd, allowing riders use of both lanes of E West Bradshaw Rd for their finish.

We also need Lead Vehicle drivers, Drivers for Officials, and Support Vehicle drivers:

• Drivers need to report to the staging area no later than 10:15 a.m.
• Drivers must have their vehicles lined up in start order and be seated in them no later than 10:30 a.m.
• Drivers are expected to volunteer from 10:15 a.m. until their pack finishes (estimated times below).
  
• If you are volunteering to drive a Follow Car, be prepared to have racers' wheelsets put in your car, front seat, back seat, trunk, anywhere they can find room. Wheels are not always the cleanest item thrown in a follow car; an old sheet thrown over your seats can save you some post-race vacuuming.
